Murals

The artist first experienced painting on a large scale by work on a music video production in Auckland 1975. Mural work became a serious interest after a move to Nelson in 1983.

Since then he has completed over 150 murals within a larger number (290) related large scale projects including theatre sets, architectural effects, big decorative signage etc.

Finlaysons mural work covers as many social situations as it does locations. Churches, corporate offices, movie sets, restaurants, prisons, to name a few. Most of his work caters to client needs and involves drafting specific plans or working alongside other designers, architects and directors.

At times on a mural project he gets licence to incorporate his own imagery interests, such as surrealism, and the results stand out in the public eye. Exterior murals do not enjoy a long life span though some become civic landmarks inbetween and a generation grows up with these icons in the urban landscape, amusing bored kids staring out car windows.

Some works cross over commercial beginnings and into ‘Environmental Art’ where he would like to specialise but, survival in a small population tends to create diversity. Mural work comes from a variety of sources and although they have individual motives for a result, they form a collective that pushes the front lines of arts awareness into a public arena.

Finlayson has plunged into this variety and looking back, the events can be defined by three avenues of commission.
