Pyrotechnique - Drawing with fire - A movie
Movie runs 4m, 16secs.
Demonstrating my method of pyrotechnique or pyrotechnical drawing on timber and showing some examples of artwork.
I've been using the torch since the early 80s and although this method has limited qualities, I still like playing with fire and managing the tricky one-off sessions of expression.
Yeah burning it in, is a one-time thing. Almost impossible to fix mistakes.
In the begining I researched and found very little info around making art directly with flame, especially in relation to western culture and anything that wasn't about pottery or metal-smiths.
Besides charcoal and ochre impressions of cave art, one thing stood out after the discovery of forging metal and that was 'poker work'. Rods and red-hot branding irons to burn impressions.
There was a resurgence in poker work by early colonial settlers who passed the time around camp fires. All of this is a distant connection to the 'super-charged' fire drawing of today.
